Big Sucker Creek

Big Sucker Creek

Two Harbors, MN

This is one of my favorite rivers on the North Shore. It has the strangest outlet to the Lake Superior in the early spring, when the ice is still stacked up, but if open, it can be a wonderful place to catch steelhead and kamloops on the lake side of the expressway. Little pools, wide enough to roll cast, provide a fun  place to catch nice fish by the mouth and grow as you get higher up. Another aspect to this place is the cobble-stone beach. Keep it clean and the owners will continue to allow fisherman to enjoy this area. Up stream of the waterfall barrier is a great fishing zone for brook trout and Brown Trout because they are less pressured. Some areas do appear to almost dry out in the summer, but are still fishable.  In 2010, a Sucker River restoration project was commenced, about 9.5 miles up stream, by MN Trout Unlimited. Details of the specific areas can be found using the link below.
