The Split Rock is one of those rivers you’ll drive by an entire lifetime, looking down on it’s blue water and wishing you would stop to explore. It seams distant from the road because it is a drop from HWY 61 and then meanders through a scrubby looking field, but only because of distance. Further up there are some nice white-water drops that would be a North Shore stop if closer to the road. On the DNR map it shows seasonal fishing and brook trout, but take it from someone that has been up there, there are plenty of accounts of beautiful steelhead being hooked in this gem of a river. Pack your fly rod and spend some time on this run. Use the Superior Hiking Trail to get further up stream if pushing water or thin trails is not your bag. Spring, summer or fall, you may never forget it!
