Thomsonite – Good Harbor Bay Shoreline Minnesota's Source For A Very Special Gemstone

Thomsonite – Good Harbor Bay Shoreline

Good Harbor Bay, MN

South of Grand Marais is a beautiful stretch of shoreline that is one of only a few stretches to find this specific form of the semi-precious gemstone, Thomsonite, one of the rarer zeolite minerals with beautiful pink and green bands. According to multiple geological sources, this specific Thomsonite was formed by a series of lava flows along Lake Superior millions of years ago.

These thomsonite nodules have concentric rings in combinations of colors: black, white, orange, pink, purple, red, and many shades of green. Some nodules have copper inclusions and rarely will be found with copper “eyes.”

Parking available at the Cutface Creek Wayside.
